Take Away Shows

I've been getting my music fill from blogotheque's Take Away Shows. Here is their run-down:

Every week, we invite an artist or a band to play in the streets, in a bar, a park, or even in a flat or in an elevator, and we film the whole session. Of course, what makes the beauty of it is all the little incidents, hesitations, and crazy stuff happening unexpectingly. Besides, we do not edit the videos so they look perfectly flawless, instead we keep the raw sound of the surroundings. Our goal is to try and capture instants, film the music just like it happens, without preparation, without tricks. Spontaneity is the keyword.

My personal favorite is Fleet Foxes performing Sun Giant/Blue Ridge Mountains.

A Short: Full Employment

With the way the economy is headed who wouldn't take an entry level job as zombie hunter. A short film called Full Employment, directed by Thomas Oberlies and Matthias Vogel, two scientists from Germany, explores the future of employment with a twist. I wish I could find a full length version of the film, but check out the trailer, in German, no subtitles, but you'll get the point.

A Short: Short Term 12

Saw a short film called, um, Short Term 12, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It just won Best Narrative Short at SIFF. The film's log line is : It's about kids and the adults who hit them. Honest, funny, and sad. An array of emotions all with 20 minutes or so.

A Short: The Blindess of the Woods

The Blindness of the Woods, a short film directed by Martin Jalfen and Javier Lourenco, is an erotic tale of a blind woman, a lumber jack, and a bear whose yarn entangle in the cold Swedish night. I saw this film at shortfest this week at SIFF. Hilariously wrong, will never look at yarn the same way again.

A Short: The Archivist

I saw the The Archivist, by James Lees this weekend at the Seattle International Film Festival's Shortfest. The Archivist is about one man's obesssion to perserve love forever. The inspiration for the film came from working at a butcher's shop.

A Short: The Apology Line

The Apology Line, a short film by James Lees is "a short documentary about the 'apology' line where people can anonymously call and confess to absolutly anything over the phone... The apologies are uncomfortably honest, sometimes funny, occasionally shocking, but always facinating." What would you apologize for?... Jeremy, I'm sorry I still have one of your clamps.

REnt you Room to designer

Interesting idea that I am not sure how I feel about yet, but i am curious, if people would feel more comfortable renting out a room to someone who said they were a designer vs someone on couch surfing? or feel more comfortable is someone was giving some money?

Library lending out more than books.

I was inspired at the library the other day, When I found out a lot of Vermont libraries rent out more than just books, they are renting gardening equipment, tents, portable stoves, snow shoes, fishing rods, etc.  Which I think makes a lot of sense, and kept me thinking what items, we store all the time and use only one and twice a year.   Does everyone, use there bike everyday, what if you let other people use it when you were not? 

Mattias Klum : National Geographic Speaker Series

I'm seeing Mattias Klum, a photographer for National Geographic, speak about the destruction of Borneo's rainforest. "Klum's expose of rampant logging and the burgeoning oil palm plantations is a call for all of us to examine the roles we play, often unknowling, in the demis of one of nature's last Edens." - National Geographic Speaker Series (check to see if they have events near you).

Kiva: microlending

I'm funding farmers in Cambodia who want to buy cattle. "Empower another human's livelihood by lending money to people in the developing world to further their business plans... In about three and a half years, Kiva has funded 145,000 plus impoverished entrepreneurs with more than $60 million... two loans are made every minute."

DIY Community Workshop now in Portland

They've done it again, they've stolen our ideas...TechShop is a DIY community workshop in California, now in Portland as well. Wasn't this our grand plan for bringing DIY to the greater community? I think it was. I still think we can do it better...their website sucks and their facilities just look like a warehouse with tools in it...where's the design?
